Glossary of Industry Ticketing Terms

Attractions

Additional access or items that a ticket is valid for. For example, after a ticket has been scanned for admission into the event, it may be scanned again for an item of merchandise, a free drink at the bar or a ride on the ferris wheel.


Audit Trail

A record of all tickets that have been scanned along with all scan data.


Authorization

A hold on the customers credit card for an amount of money. An authorization guarantees that the funds are collected from the customer but does not actually move the money. If the authorization is captured, the transaction is completed. If it is voided or there is no movement for 2-3 weeks, then the funds are released back to the customer.


Cart Abandonment

An email that is sent to a customer to encourage them to place an order for an event that they viewed but did not purchase.


Chargeback

Occurs when a customer disputes a charge on their credit card. This can be for a suspected fraudulent transaction, duplicate charges or if they are unhappy with the product they received.


Consignment

A tool which allows batches of tickets to be held for retail sales. Once the tickets are printed they are regarded as sold. Tickets can only be consigned for reserved seating events only.


Customer Fee

The fee the ticket buyer pays.


Facility Fee

The fee that gets paid to the event organizer.


Link Tracking

Shortened urls to ticket pages to allow sales to be tracked per link. Useful to gauge the effectiveness of a website or promotional email blast.


Payment Plan

Allows a customer to pay for their tickets incrementally over a period of time.


Price Levels

A feature that allows a price to increase at a specific date and time or after a predetermined quantity of tickets have been sold.


Processing Fee

The fee charged along with every payment processed.


Print@Home

A PDF ticket that has a unique scannable barcode that can be printed out or presented on the screen of a smartphone.


Promo Codes

Entered by the customer on the ticket page to unlock hidden tickets, discount the price or reveal free tickets.


Reserved Seating

Seated tickets which are specifically assigned to a customer by section, row and seat number. It can be set to 'pick a seat' (customer chooses) or 'best available' (the customer is automatically allocated the next best seats).


RFID Wristband

Radio Frequency Identification. Tickets are loaded onto bracelets with electronic chips which are scanned for validity using a contactless RFID ‘reader’.


See Tickets Box Office

A suite of tools which are generally used at an event or venue. Features ticket entry scanning, walk up cash and credit card ticket sales, will call and customer support.


Shipping Fee

The shipping fee is the cost used to ship items to a buyer.


Shipping Receipt

A PDF receipt customers receive after purchasing tickets which will be mailed out at a later date.


Sub Promoter

These are tracking links that can be given to street teams or for internet marketing so that customer purchases can be tracked against a certain code.


Talent

An artist, band, performer or celebrity who is appearing at an event. When listed, these link to affiliate sites which gives extra exposure and often lead to more sales.


Ticket Stock

Official branded paper tickets (not to be confused with a ticket you print at home).


Upsell

‘Add to Order’ ticket suggestions associated to an event that allow customers to have tickets to different events in their cart at the same time.


User Permissions

User permissions specify what tasks users can perform and what features users can access.


Will Call Receipt

A PDF receipt for a will call ticket order. Customers present this along with the credit card used at purchase and matching ID to pick up their tickets at the event.


Venue

The location where the event takes place.
